Hundreds Dead In Baghdad Car Bombs

In the Iraqi capital there has been a series of car bomb explosions and more than 120 people have been killed. The series of attacks is one of the bloodiest of the past three years.

Thick black clouds of smoke were visible in the Iraqi capital, as on Tuesday (08.12.2009) several car bombs detonated in quick succession. In the wake of at least 127 people died and hundreds were injured, as announced by the Iraqi Interior Ministry. The five explosions were apparently coordinated and carried out every few minutes in different districts of Baghdad.

The attacks were directed against the Ministry of Labor, the courthouse, the university, the business district and a suburb in the south of the Iraqi capital, said in police circles. Several children who had resided at the time of the explosions in a children’s culture house near an explosion site, were taken injured by flying through the air and broken glass.

The explosions devastated a market and at least brought a house in the city center to collapse, several vehicles were set on fire. “Seconds before the explosion we had walked into a shop. The ceiling collapsed, burying us. We were unconscious. Then I heard screams and sirens everywhere,” reported one of the injured. With the cranes, the rescue workers hurried up trying to create the debris aside, to be able to recover survivors. Even U.S. soldiers were involved in the rescue and helped provide security.
