Gun Shy Assassin Presents Adler Chatter With Chris Adler
Working on a new heavy metal record may just become the next workout craze, because Lamb of God’s Chris Adler has lost some fucking serious weight working on the follow-up to Wrath these last few months. Yet, he’s eating ice cream every night like it’s going out of style.
“I don’t know what’s going on,” Adler tells Gun Shy Assassin. “I quit drinking at the end of the year in preparation for the record, so I could be at the top of my game and all my faculties are working, which paid off big time. I’ve done this for most of the past record. Maybe the first one, I didn’t.”
Adler also said that quitting the sauce was a healthy choice mentally, and it is paying off in spades. “I am playing better than I did ten years ago,” Adler enthused. “But, in doing that, I have turned that addictive behavior onto sweets of any kind and ice cream is my current victim.”
He’s been gorging himself on that Girl Scout Cookies Ice Cream. I admit, I also love that shit, but I’m a fat-ass. He’s into the Thin Mints and Samoas ones.
“The fucked up thing is, because — I guess its the night drinking and playing drums every day, because we’re keeping a pretty good schedule of playing at least six hours every day — when we came home from tour, I was at 174. And the other day, I got on the scale and I was 143,” revealed Adler. “I’m not a short guy, so I definitely…it’s like I’ve just been working out the whole time. I have bee losing weight like crazy. So I am not feeling guity about all the ice cream.”
When he’s not recording drums for the forthcoming studio set from one of the world’s biggest metal bands, Adler is a devoted father who dotes on his three-year-old daughter.
“I am a manny,” Adler says. “I am the one guy at the playground with the kid when it’s all moms, so…I can tell all these women, they have a hard time figuring me out. I know they’re thinking Amber Alert; they don’t know what to do about it. They all talk to me to try to figure out how it is I am there with this adorable little girl.
“Outside of the heavy metal life, it’s pretty insane over here — let me tell you,” Adler jokes. “If you want to see the real life me, you can meet me at the playground or in the ice cream section of your local supermarket.”
How is that new album coming along? “I’m excited,” Adler tells me. “When you are in the middle of it, writing, and having to perform it over and over again, you kind of get lost in it. But when I get to sit back and we have this hard disc…I get to sit back on a Sunday and listen to it, and not have to play it — it’s pretty exciting stuff. I’m excited that at our spot in time, and at our age, that we’re still doing something that is different and better than anything we’ve done in the past.”
Chris Adler is the drummer for Grammy-nominated metal band Lamb of God and the author of the book “The Making of Lamb of God’s New American Gospel,” a comprehensive behind-the-scenes narrative book detailing the early days of Lamb of God and the writing and recording of their New American Gospel LP.
