Seattle’s Got Soul: ‘Exclusive Soul’ – Live Review
Last weekend I was lucky enough to share the love that everyone was feeling at the The Triple Door. From my point of view, Seattle isn’t known for its Soul; or maybe I am just “Gen Y” and missed the movement. Regardless, we all have nothing to fear because there are some passionate musicians, artists, and fans who will make sure Soul stays.
On May 28, The Town Entertainment and Choklate Music brought The Triple Door Lounge a true “Exclusive Experienceâ€. It was intimate, yet exciting, and offered me a soulful evening.  Between the “sexy upbeat sounds of husband and wife duo, Malice & Mario Sweet” to “popular soul crooner Zach Bruce and his band”, I was thoroughly impressed.  I felt the warmth of a smiling “welcome” invitation from Choklate herself while Jazmyn Scott (The Town Entertainment) got our tickets squared away.
The Sweets gave the room a ton of energy with their talent while Ike James sang back up vocals and Justo (The Physics) spun for them. I got to check in with the Sweets after their set: “The room was engaged and open to love and a live musical experience. Â It was intimate and warm. Â The Triple Door is an ideal venue for R&B and soul music. Mario and I did not know what to expect for the evening, but we were pleasantly surprised and really humbled.”
I discovered Zach Bruce last Saturday. I’m not sure if he will like this comparison, but he reminded me of a refined, non-corny beautiful mixture of John Legend and Musiq Soulchild. His band is extremely talented, which adds to the entire feel. Zach’s thoughts on the night: “Exclusive Soul was absolutely amazing! Going in I didn’t know what to expect, but it couldn’t have gone any better. The crowd was great and that made it so much better. It was an honor to share the stage with Mario and Malice Sweet and for Choklate to host. I truly believe this was the first of many great shows from The Town entertainment at that venue.”
After I got home, I immediately reached out to Choklate. I had to hear her thoughts on the night, on Soul in Seattle, and I just wanted an excuse to talk to her: “I’ve just been voted in as Governor of the Pacific Northwest Grammy Chapter, and with that I’ve been really taking inventory of where the Soul is in Seattle and who is doing it and doing it well. I am also trying to find different ways to bring light to the music that I’m finding, as well as have already been aware of and a fan of. Exclusive Soul was all about taking two totally different representations of Seattle Soul music and mashing them together on one night at a beautiful venue with beautiful people. Both artists did a phenomenal job and I was really impressed with their professionalism and dedication to making the night a success. I’m honored to be affiliated with both acts as well as The Town Entertainment.”
Their next event is on July 3, 2011. It will be held at Chop Suey. It is their second installment of the new Seattle Soul On Blast Series. The Men of Soul with a killer lineup: Lurell Lowe, The Good Sin, Peace Nation, Nate Vibes hosted by Zach Bruce with DJ Vitamin D. It is going to be another amazing night so pencil this in on your calendars!
