Dave Davidson’s Altars Of Fatness: First Course
Welcome to my Altars of Fatness column, where I’ll be giving you guys the scoop on some killer places to chow down at while on the road. I’m a self-proclaimed food nerd and love hitting up new places to eat while out on tour, so I’m happy that my first entry for Gun Shy Assassin is highlighting one of my favorite foodstuffs: Fish tacos.
South Beach Bar and Grill has been a tour staple for about a year now and every time we roll through San Diego, we always hit it up. They’ve got a great selection of different seafood tacos on the menu and if you get there on a Tuesday, most of the tacos are only $2.50 which is rad, especially if you’re on a budget.
They also do half off on all appetizers during happy hour so you can drink and snack for relatively cheap if you get there by 3 p.m. The portions at South Beach are pretty large and the quality of the ingredients is top notch. You can’t go wrong with the fried shrimp or Baja fish taco but if you feel like splurging a bit, try getting one with grilled lobster.
The tacos come with fresh pico de gallo, purple cabbage, cheese, a drizzle of crema and limes on the side. All you have to do is hit ’em with a little hot sauce and you’re good to go.
Since this place also serves booze and is a block from the beach I highly recommend getting some sort of tropical drink alongside to quench your thirst. My girly drink of choice? Pina Colada hands down. There’s something goddamn magical about the combination of Mexican food and frozen blended drinks, it’s one of life’s perfect unions.
Just make sure you bring your ID with you because this place is 21+ Sorry kiddies, you’ll just have to wait till you’re older.
