Rabbit Pet Insurance Options Still Too Limited

Pet owners looking to protect their rabbits against the cost of expensive veterinary bills may suffer from a lack of competition as owners can only choose from a couple of providers.

Although there are more than 50 different pet insurance brands in the UK, cover is essentially available for cats and dogs. Dogs and cats represent the main part of the UK’s pet population with about 16 millions of them, compared to just 1 million for rabbits. And the difference in options offered to bunny owners is equally significant, with policies available from only just 2 providers: Petplan and Helpucover.

Petplan is the UK’s number one pet insurer and provides health policies for cats, dogs, rabbits, horses and exotic animals. Helpucover aims to fill the gap other insurers leave behind and offers lifetime cover for cats, dogs and rabbits including a premium waiver benefit that helps you pay your premium in case you were made redundant and couldn’t afford the costs.

The lack of choice means that customers can only choose low cover levels, generally £2,000 towards veterinary fees per year, although prices remain attractive. Rabbit pet insurance is available from just about £10 a month and customers buying online can get an extra discount. Customers are also advised to read the terms and conditions and small prints as some notable exclusions apply to some policies: for instance, Petplan requires your rabbit to have an annual teeth check or examination and will not pay for any preventative or cosmetic treatment.
