Three suspects linked to al-Qaeda have been arrested Over Baghdad Bombings
Three suspects linked to al-Qaeda have been arrested in connection with the investigation into the coordinated attacks that have bloodied Baghdad Tuesday, including the Green Zone supposed to be overprotected, it was learned Sunday at the Ministry of Interior.
At least 127 people were killed and over 500 others injured in five explosions that rocked the Iraqi capital. These attacks, including the actions of suicide bombers and suicide car bomb, aimed especially government buildings.
For three days, the Iraqi Parliament asked government officials to identify security breaches that led to the carnage.
During one of these sessions, Sunday, Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani alluded to arrests. “There are 13 coffins awaiting criminals involved in Tuesday’s attacks and those criminals will be tried and sentenced,” he promised the deputies.
Later, an official from his office said 13 people had been arrested, who were suspected to have contributed to the preparation of the attacks. These are the first arrests since confirmed the series of coordinated explosions.
Before Tuesday, the U.S. military had alerted Iraqi security services that insurgents were preparing to carry out three attacks, including one in the Green Zone or nearby, acknowledged the General Abboud Qanbar, a former military commander of Baghdad. General Qanbar lost that post after the coordinated attacks. He said Sunday the Iraqi lawmakers that the U.S. warning arrived too late to prevent the attacks. AP
