Cell Phone Reviews: Palm Pixi Plus
The Palm Pixi Plus is correctly named. If you have not seen it yet, it looks like a small Blackberry. This is a great middle priced smartphone for those who are not up to having the flagship phone from Palm yet. Take a look at this short article to see what you get for the size and price.
This phone looks good as most all Palm devices do. The attractive good looks may be one of the reasons Palm products are so popular. The screen continues with the good looks. This one has a display of 2.6 inches ( 6.6 centimeters if you are not in the United States ) that can handle 262,144 colors. The resolution is set to a compromised 320 by 400 pixels. That is not much less than a regular sized screen. Remember this is a scaled down model with a price tag under one hundred dollars. The type of display is still the aging LCD version. But the size is somethng worth noting. You will love the small size of the Palm Pixi. It is just 4.37 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide. The phone is covered with a rubber backing to help it stay in place when you are driving. The keyboard is going to be hard to use if you have big fingers, so beware. The buttons are about the size of tic tacs.
The Palm Pixi Plus comes with a two megapixel camera with flash. Two megapixels is not going to get you a super good picture, but if you can handle mediocre photos it will do. A software update should bring the video capture feature to this smartphone. It does not have video capability yet. If you want to watch videos you will want to opt for a larger screen anyway. The music abilities are restricted also. You can not play Microsoft files ( WMA ). You can play MP3, AAC, AAC+ and WAV music files. One neat trick on the Pixi Plus is that you can lock the phone and play music. You will still have access to control the music program.
For internet, you have the WebKit browser and the WebOS operating system to use. The operating system is custom made by Palm for their devices and is a good ( some say better ) operating system like the iPhone or Android. It uses the smart “card” system of control and there is no doubt you will like it after you get used to using it. The Palm Pixi Plus runs the 1.3.5.1 version of WebOS. Version 1.4 should be the version to allow video usage from this smartphone. To use the operating system, you simply swipe your finger across the screen to do most anything you want. It does come with 256 megabytes of RAM memory that will let you open a truckload of applications ( programs ) and not crash the phone. The WebKit browser is nothing short of a pleasure to use. It is related to the Safari browser and is itself an “open source” piece of software.
Most models are going to have Wi-Fi. This is getting to be a standard feature for many smartphones. This particular smartphone will allow you to make your Pixi a mobile hotspot for a 3G connection. You can send a signal to up to five other devices. You will have to pay the carrier ( Verizon ) a little extra for this ability. This hotspot connectivity of the Pixi will not affect your incoming calls.
There is no external memory card slot. You can make up for this with the micro USB connection and the ability to connect your Palm Pixi Plus with bluetooth. You will like this cheaper section of the mobile market that Palm is covering with their smartphones. The size is incredibly small for all the features you are getting. Buy one and be happy.
