Based on the real life events of Steven Jay Russell, the Prison escapee imposter and con-artist.
Jim Carrey is Russell, laying on his deathbed and recollecting on his life as it goes by in his memory. The starting point in the memories is when Russell is a police officer happily married, who spends his free time trying to finds his biological mother who gave him up when he was just a little boy. All the time he put into search was worthwhile but by the time he finds his mother she wants nothing to do with him. With this in hand, Russell finally accepts his real self as a gay man. He leaves his family and old life behind as he moves to Miami and starts a new one. Surprisingly, Russell becomes a con artist in order to make a living and after one unsuccessful trial he is sent to prison. In side he meets the love of his life, Phillip Morris, who is sadly freed from jail leaving Russell heart broken. He manages to break out of prison a number of times and to put on different personalities all so he can be close to his love.
