Mini-cyclone Hits Melbourne – Record Floods
A mini cyclone hits Melbourne this Sunday and Australia’s second largest city is now floating in water. A storm of about 62 miles per hour blew through the city and brought heavy rain across the southern state of Victoria. 26 millimeters of rain were recorded in Melbourne in one hour, and in other areas up to 70 millimeters or rain wwere measured.
Richard Carlyon, senior forecaster says, “Yesterday we had golf-to-tennis ball-sized hail and certainly there’s a prospect of similar sized hail somewhere in the state today,”
Several buildings were damaged in the storm and the famous Docklands Stadium was among them. National gallery of Victoria was completely flooded and the northeast parts of the state of Queensland which has been in drought for the past decade has been flooded completely.
Rivers across the country got tremendous increase in their level and in St George the Balonne River reached 13.5 meters which is its highest level recorded ever. The estimated damages come to hundreds of millions of dollars - mostly damages caused to roadways and rail lines.
Residents who were hi by the storm described it as a “massive water event”, and they feels it will tale some time to get a total recovery.
