Why Was Annie Lennox Wearing An “HIV Positive” T-shirt On Idol?

Questions started arising upon Annie Lennox’s choice of shirt on the last episode of American Idol Gives Back, after she performed her new song wearing a T-shirt with the writing: “HIV Positive”.

Although she was supposed to perform live on the show, she had to do it via satellite due to the Icelandic volcanic eruption. The statement made by the shirt made fans question whether it had anything to do with Lennox’s personal life. Later it was understood that she wore the shirt out of solidarity. As explained on YouTube, she stated that fortunately she is not HIV Positive, but there are 22 million people only in the sub-saharan Africa that aren’t as fortunate and are HIV Positive.

Fans that have been following Lennox’s work on her website, know that it is not the first time she has acted towards the cause of fighting the disease. In 2007 the SING Campaign was founded by her, and the money raised by it assisted in the support of those suffering from AIDS, and also in the prevention of it in South Africa. Lennox’s main goal is to normalize the disease, for it’s hard for people to tell their family and friends about them being HIV Positive. She uses music and singing as a way to open hearts and make a difference.
