The 34th Annual Bloomsday Race Review
The 34th annual Bloomsday race took part Sunday, May 2nd, 2010, with the participation of 40,000 runners from all over the world.
With a clear and sunny weather, the runners, walkers and wheelchair racers took off at 9:00 a.m and ran along the 12 kilometers (7.46 miles) route of the Spokane, Washington race, which also goes by the name of The Lilach Bloomsday Run.
The race, which is held every first Sunday of every May since 1977, was founded by the Olympic Marathon runner Don Kardong, who found the inspiration for the race’s name in the James Joyce character, Ulysses.
D-chip, the new shoelace chip timer was worn by the participants, taking the place of the traditional one, which is worn around the ankle.
This year’s winners: Peter Kirui from Kenya was the winner of the men’s race with the result of 34:30 minutes; Lineth Chepkurui, also from Kenya, was the first to finish of the women’s race with the result of 38:30; Jordan Bird won the wheelchair race, and Amanda McGrory won the women’s elite wheel chair division.
The race’s course goes down Downtown Spokane, passes by Mukogowa Ft. Wright Institute and finishes back downtown at the Spokane County Courthouse.
