After The iPhone 4G Fiasco: The Motorola Droid Shadow Leaked Online
If you are one that keeps up with how hot smartphones are at this time, you will no doubt have heard about the recent leak and fiasco with Gizmodo and the iPhone 4G left at a bar. Well it has happened again. Perhaps this is going to be the normal way “important” smartphones get introduced to the world ? The Motorola Droid Shadow has been leaked online and the world is getting excited. If you are reading this in May 2010, you are one of the first to find out. Take a quick read to see more juicy details.
The Motorola Shadow is so named for a “code name”. That is, it may end up having yet another name when it is finally revealed “officially”. For now, those in the know are licking their chops, knowing that it will have “faster and better” written all over it. What does it look like ? It is rumored to not have a manual keyboard. If that is a downer for many, well, there are other Motorola models with Android that do have a manual keyboard. The Droid is one such beast. The Motorola Shadow is nearly 10 millimeters thick, 9.9 to be exact. If you live in the United States, that is just .39 inches thick. That is super skinny ! For comparison, the “Google Phone” ( Nexus One ) is .45 inches thick.
As things get faster inside smartphones, the Motorola Shadow may be towing the “speed” line for its phones for this year. But that is not a sure bet. Some of the fastest Android smartphones have processors running at 1000 or 1500 megahertz. The Shadow will be “toned down” a bit, to 720 megahertz. It is slated to possess a TI OMAP 3630 processor. While 720 is not much slower than 1000, it all depends on how you use the device. For loading videos and other “heavy” programs you could see a lag.
The Android operating system is rumored to be installed in the Motorola Shadow. If it does not come out with at least version 2.1 ( Eclair ) it would be a surprise. If it does come out with version 2.1, you will be able to update it more than likely to the much faster Froyo version 2.2. This version is already out as of this writing. The Motoblur user interface for Android will likely be installed. Some people hate it, some people like it. You will have to make your own call on that one.
If you are waiting for a great screen to go with your Motorola smartphone, wait for the Shadow. It has a great display with 4.1 inches of viewing area. It is “full touch” and pulls no punches. If you do not like this screen, you probably will not like any normal smartphone screens. With that said, it has an eight megapixel camera that takes high definition videos. The Shadow itself also has an HDMI cable to hook up to to a high definition display. This puts this device in direct competition with the HTC Evo 4G. The HTC is a much-touted device also and is going to be out soon.
The on board memory is rated at two gigabytes. If you read somewhere else that it is two megabytes ( with an “M” ), ignore it. The Shadow will no doubt come out with a slot for a huge MicroSD card. This will increase the capacity to around sixteen to 32 gigabytes. When you upgrade to Android 2.2 you will be able to save applications ( apps ) on the MicroSD card.
Basic black seems to be the color of choice for all new Motorola devices, even high priced ones. Look for the Shadow to be “formally” dressed also. It is supposed to be out in July, just a short four weeks away. Look for more leaks on some important smartphones soon.
