American Idol continues to head downwards on ratings (www.americanidol.com)

American Idol is one of the most popular TV shows in America but this season, the show is continuing to head downwards when it comes to their ratings. The opening show a few weeks ago received the lowest viewing figures of any opening show ever and the figures are still extremely poor for the show.

It is expected that the show will be down on the viewing figures from last year by around 20 percent which could mean that it is overthrown as the most popular TV show in the US. The show appears to be having a steady decline in the number of viewers too as they are getting worse and worse as each episode airs. it is difficult to compare the show to last season however as last year, there were a few two hour time slots whereas this year, they have only been an hour.

However, the viewing figures for the show are still disappointing as people seem to be choosing other shows to watch instead of America Idol. This week, the show featured the auditions in the area of Houston, Texas and involved much conflict between the judges.

Twitter can block tweets depending on country

Twitter; one of the most widely used social networking websites in the world has this week announced that they have developed technology that will allow them to block certain tweets on a country by country basis. Twitter has announced on its blog that it is able to reactively withhold certain content from users in specific countries but that the removed content would still be available to users in other parts of the world.

Twitter is currently expanding their business globally and this technology will really help Twitter when it comes to expanding into countries that have different privacy laws and views on freedom of expression. For example, the technology will be used in countries such as France and Germany which ban pro-Nazi content and will also have a lot of application in other countries around the world.

Twitter and many other social networking websites have played huge parts is the organising of many protests over the past few years and it is feared by some people that this new technology will mean that content like this will be blocked out of certain countries and will block freedom of speech.

Apple iPhone 4S is best selling iPhone for Apple

Apple’s iPhone 4S device was only released a few months ago back in October of 2011 but it has already become the best selling iPhone device that Apple offers. The iPhone 4S device offers features including the hugely popular Siri feature and a survey by CIRP has now revealed that 89 percent of the people that are purchasing an iPhone are opting for the iPhone 4S.

Apple has been offering the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3Gs devices at heavily reduced prices but this isn’t stopping people from opting for the latest iPhone 4S device according to the survey. The iPhone 3GS is actually available for free on a monthly contract yet still, most people are opting for the iPhone 4S device.

Apple has recently announced that they shifted 37 million units of their iPhone devices in the fourth quarter of 2011 which is a staggering amount. The survey that was conducted found that not only were people opting for the iPhone 4S device, but many of them were also going for the moist expensive 64GB version that retails for £699 in the UK. It was found that 21 percent of people chose this model.

Over five million people unemployed in Spain

Spain is a country that like many, is currently battling with their unemployment figures and this week, they have announced that their unemployment rate has actually surpassed five million people. This figure was for the final quarter of 2011 where it is thought that around 5.3 million people were out of world. The figures have come directly from the Office of National Statistics. This is a huge increase for Spain and it is actually an increase from 4.9 million people from the previous quarter.

This unemployment rate is the highest rate in Spain for around 17 years and the country has the highest jobless rate in the entire eurozone. Spain’s unemployment rate is currently standing at 22.8 percent which is more than twice the average unemployment rate for countries within Europe. The figures show that the unemployment is the country is mainly made up of 16 – 24 year olds as it is said that 48.6 percent of people this age are actually without a job.

Spain has been struggling in their economy since the property bubble burst back in 2008. This has led to a lot of unemployment in the country and the new ruling popular part is pledging to tackle the jobless issue.

Vimeo launches a revamped version of their website

Vimeo is one of the largest video sharing websites in the world after YouTube and now, they have announced a major revamp of their website. The company has launched an entirely new look website that they are hoping will improve the discoverability of videos of the website. The site is extremely popular and attracts millions of visitors a day.

Vimeo actually receives around 65 million unique visitors every single month and now, Vimeo is planning to roll out their new redesign. The redesign could help the website gain a lot of ground over YouTube which is currently the world’s largest video sharing website by far. YouTube actually has around 4 billion video views every day and is currently owned by Google.

Vimeo will be changing lots of things on their website including the ways that users can reco0mmend related videos and how their ‘likes’ affect the recommendation algorithm. The site will also introduce a news feed similar to Facebook that will allow users to browse through any of the updates for people that they follow on Vimeo. Vimeo has said that the redesign will stand out from YouTube as it focuses on content.

Visa Transactions increase by 76 percent (www.visa.com)

Visa transactions are growing around the world but there was a major increase in Ireland last year as it has now been revealed that visa Card transactions actually grew by a staggering 76 percent. The figures that were published today provide details of this and shows that the card holders in Ireland have actually accounted for a total of 13 billion Euro’s in spend in 2011. This is a huge rise on the previous year’s figures by 48 percent.

It is said in the figures that were released today that there was a total of 177.9 million transactions on Visa cards in Ireland last year and that as a result, there was around one eighth of all consumer spend with Visa in the country. Visa Europe has said that there was a 28 percent increase in the number of visa cards in the country including debit cards, credit cards and prepaid cards last year. It estimates that there are around 3.4 million cards in use in the country.

Visa Europe has also seen growth in 2011 with around 14 percent growth. Around one seventh of consumer spend in Europe is with Visa cards.

Student loans are already the bane of students lives and many people are unable to pay them back after they have left college due to the lack of jobs in the US. Now, it is thought that many students could actually see a rise in their interest rates this summer is Congress doesn’t act to extend the rate reduction that was introduced back in 2007.

Student loans currently have an interest rate of 3.7 percent if they are federal loans which is thanks to the rate reduction that was passed by congress back in 2007. This is currently government by the law but the law is set to expire this summer, which will mean that many student loan interest rates will rise. It is thought by some that this could see student loan interest rates rise to as much as 6.8 percent this summer which would be a disaster for most students.

President Obama is urging law makers to extend the low interest law in his State of union address this week as he is looking to make college more affordable for middle to low income families. Students currently have around $25,000 debt on average when they leave college and this could increase as interest rates do.

Apple and Motorola in lawsuit thanks to Google

Apple and Google are two companies that are currently going head to head with each other for a slice of the Smartphone market as well as tablet PC market. Earlier this year, Google actually purchased the Motorola Mobility company and now, Motorola Mobility has filed for a lawsuit against Apple which is thought to have been decided by Google.

Motorola has claimed that Apple is infringing copyright laws in the Us in regards to their iPhone 4S device along with iCloud. It is claimed by the company that Apple has fitted a concealed antenna device within the iPhone 4S that breaks copyright laws and that Apple is also using apparatus that controls the utilisation of software that is added to a portable communication device.

Google and Motorola have also device that Motorola Mobility will not be able to file for lawsuits without the permission of Google. This will mean that Google can basically decide when and who the company files lawsuits against in the US. The lawsuit was filed in the Southern District of Florida and seeks an injunction for the case. There were six patents that were tackled in the lawsuit in total.

Apple sees net profit double thanks to iPhone and iPad

Apple is a company that has rally built up over the last few years and they now rely on products such as their iPhone device and iPad for a vast amount of their income. Apple has now announced that in the final quarter of last year, their profits have more than doubled thanks to the success of these products and have announced one of the largest quarterly profits on record ever.

Apple has announced that they have made around $13.1 billion in the fourth quarter of last year which is more than double the profit for the same quarter just a year earlier. Investors in the company are extremely happy as share prices had a profit per share of more than $13.80 and is one of the highest profit per share records ever for Apple.

Much of this revenue has come in over the Christmas period where consumers purchased their latest iPhone 4S device along with iPad devices. These profits now account for a huge amount of Apple’s income and these numbers give Google Android and other competitors a reason to step up their game at the moment.

Lloyds plans to cut 700 jobs (www.lloyds.com)

The Lloyds banking group has announced that they are planning to cut a total of 700 jobs across the UK as the new Chief Executive of the company continues with his major overhaul. The jobs that will be lost within the company will form part of the wider job cut that was announced by Lloyds last year in which they explained that there would be a total of 15,000 job cuts across the board.

Lloyds is a bank that is currently 40.2 percent owned by the taxpayer and it is thought that many of the job losses that are planned by the company could come in Newport and Cardiff. Up to 200 people could face losing their jobs in these areas. The rest of the cuts will be spread across the rest of the country.

This announcement not what the UK economy wants to hear at the moment as the UK jobless rate has hit a 17 year high recently. Lloyds is also planning to cut the international team this year which will mean the loss of jobs for many others too. Lloyds profits decreased by 21 percent in the three months leading up to the end of September last year.
