The question is, is it justified, as discussed on numerous forums around the net, will the Google Nexus change the face of mobile phones forever? In reality, the answer to the question is yes and no. In the yes corner, the fact that the handset is backed by a huge conglomerate that currently dominates our search activity on the net, cannot be underestimated. However in the no corner, is the fact that this handset essentially offers similar technology to that which is currently available within a variety of other handsets, as well as the fact that the Nexus is actually manufactured by HTC.

There is no doubt that the Google Nexus One is a comprehensively functional handset with an appealing style. One of its many facets is its 3.7 inch AMOLED display screen, which offers excellent colour reproduction and touch screen technology. The phone comes with trackball navigation as well as a variety of touch sensitive controls, which are suitably coupled with both accelerometer and proximity sensors. As many will know, this allows certain tasks to be automated such as orientation of imagery as well as auto shut off to conserve battery power.

The unit size is impressive, considering the level of functionality included therein. The handset weighs in at 130 g, whilst measuring 190 mm x 59 mm wide and is extremely slim line at only 11 mm thick. The unit makes use of one of the fastest processors available which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD 8250 1 GHz processor, in conjunction with the popular Android operating system, which within this particular handset is version 2.1. Herein lies one of this handsets most popular elements, as Android based handsets go, this particular phone is one of the most advanced.

As you would expect from a Google product, the ability to connect to a wide variety of Google-based services is one of the central tenements of this particular handset. YouTube, Google talk as well as Picasa integration are all included within this handset. In addition dedicated search keys are provided with the ability to utilise the included Google search, maps and Gmail features

Entertainment with the handset comes in a variety of guises, which include a 5.0 megapixel camera that offers autofocus and smile detection as standard, with the added benefit of geo-tagging and an LED flash for illumination. Video capture is offered at D1 quality, which equates to 720 x 480 pixels at a minimum frames per second of 20. The usual MP4/MP3 player is included within the package and supports the majority of audio and video file formats.

Satellite navigation is one of the key elements included within this handset and comes with A-GPS support. To make full use of web-based functionality included with this handset, internet access must be provided, and it is, in the form of the HSDPA and Wi Fi connections, which offers speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. Class 10 versions of GPRS and EDGE are also included as well as micro-USB and Bluetooth connection. The handset comes with 4 GB of memory capacity, stored on a card, with the benefit of being able to increase this up to 32 GB by utilising a card slot.

The HTC Google Nexus One is an interesting addition to the mobile phone fraternity. Its popularity is down to a modicum of advanced technology, superimposed by effective and stylish design, but ultimately its success will ride on the wave of the Google brand.
